Nithya Raman Makes History: Indian-Origin Leader Projected to Become Los Angeles’ First Asian American Mayor

Indian-origin politician Nithya Raman is projected to emerge victorious in the Los Angeles mayoral election, defeating incumbent Karen Bass in a closely contested race. If confirmed, her victory would mark a historic milestone, making her the first Asian American to lead the city.

According to projections released by Decision Desk HQ on November 5, Raman secured 51.1% of the votes, ahead of Bass, who received 48.33%. The contest witnessed a significant shift in voting trends, with Raman gradually building momentum as additional ballots were counted.

The race initially appeared to favour the incumbent, with early counting updates placing Bass in the lead. However, subsequent results changed the electoral landscape, allowing Raman to establish a narrow advantage. At the time of the projection, vote counting was still underway, with additional ballots yet to be accounted for.

Born in Kerala in 1981, Nithya Raman moved to the United States at the age of six and later became a naturalised American citizen. Her academic journey includes a degree from Harvard University, followed by a master’s degree in urban planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Before entering electoral politics, Raman built a career focused on urban development, civic infrastructure and community welfare. She founded Transparent Chennai, an urban research initiative working to improve public services and sanitation through research and citizen participation.

After relocating to Los Angeles in 2013, she worked with the city’s administrative leadership and co-founded the SELAH Neighborhood Homeless Coalition, an initiative focused on addressing homelessness and supporting vulnerable communities. She also served as Executive Director of Time’s Up Entertainment.

Raman’s projected electoral success represents a significant moment for Asian American representation in American politics. Her journey from Kerala to the leadership race of one of the United States’ largest cities highlights the growing influence of immigrant communities in public life. Her background in urban planning, community engagement and civic development could also bring a distinct perspective to the city’s governance priorities. As Los Angeles awaits the completion of the vote-counting process, Raman’s projected victory has already drawn attention as a landmark development in the city’s political landscape.
